Zestril: What It Treats
Zestril is prescribed separately or in a combination with different drugs to treat problems related to high blood pressure. Together with additional pills it can be prescribed for heart failure healing. After an episode of heart attack, Zestril can be recommended by the doctor to increase the survival rate. Zestril belongs to ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor drugs. Its effects are produced by reducing some chemical compounds in blood, which are tightening vessels. Due to this fact the blood flow becomes smoother and the heart works much easier.
Pharmacokinetics
Zestril isn't bound by any proteins of the blood plasma (except for ACE). Its active ingredient is not metabolized and completely ejected from the organism with urine.
Use during Pregnancy
The usage of this medication may cause fetal sickness and higher rate of unexpected death. Use of Zestril during pregnancy is not suitable, except when it is not allowed to use other drugs, or they are ineffective. However, it is important to remember that this medication penetrates through the placenta. If Zestril is prescribed in the last trimester, hypotension of the fetus, serious damage to kidneys and oligohydroamniosis are possible. Oligohydroamniosis can cause limb contracture and craniofacial deformities.
When used in II and III trimester, hyperkalemia and cranial hypoplasia are possible. If oligohydroamniosis is observed, it should be discontinued, except when it is considered necessary to save the life of the mother. There is no data on penetration into the breast milk. However, it is not necessary to prescribe it to nursing mothers without good reasons.
